Thai Thanh – The person who makes Vietnamese splendid (Part 2)

Famous singer Thai Thanh was born in Bach Mai village, Hanoi with a name that carries many expectations from a Bac Ha intellectual family: Pham Thi Bang Thanh. Bang Thanh is part of the phrase “Bang Thanh Ngoc Khiet”, which refers to noble and pure virtue.

The voice of a famous family in the Vietnamese arts industry

There are hundreds of things worth mentioning when mentioning Thai Thanh of Vietnamese new music, but certainly two names cannot be forgotten: Pham Dinh Chuong and Pham Duy. These are two relatives who have a great influence on her musical path. Both of these men are considered great musicians with great influence on the culture and spirit of Vietnamese people at that time, one is her biological brother (Pham Dinh Chuong), the other is both a brother-in-law and the person who mentored and helped her voice become a legend (Pham Duy).

With her older brother Pham Dinh Chuong, she was closely associated with him on the musical path when they were both members of the family music group: Thang Long Choir. The members include: Hoai Trung (aka Pham Dinh Viem, half-brother of musician Pham Dinh Chuong), Thai Hang (aka Pham Thi Quang Thai, biological sister of Pham Dinh Chuong, wife of musician Pham Duy, later mother of: Thai Hien, Duy Quang, Thai Thao), Hoai Bac (aka musician Pham Dinh Chuong), Khanh Ngoc (ex-wife of Mr. Pham Dinh Chuong), Thai Thanh (youngest sister of the family, mother of singer Y Lan). The Thang Long Choir was founded in 1949 in Hanoi, later operating in the South every night at the Pink Night tea room.

It can be considered that Thai Thanh’s family, and later adding musician Pham Duy as his son-in-law, is one of the most prestigious and influential families in Vietnam in the field of new music.

Many young people later learned about Thai Thanh through the lyrics of musician Anh Bang in his work Nameless drops of sadness: “Tea room to rest and listen to Thai Thanh sing Biet Ly”. However, when talking about Thai Thanh, it is impossible to separate Pham Duy’s music, even though she has successfully sung most genres from folk songs to northern resistance music before 1954 (typically My hometown is the midlands became a phenomenon on French Asia radio), pre-war music, love music, religious music… And certainly no one needs to decide whether Thai Thanh’s voice is luxurious or cheesy, because even the most popular song through her singing becomes incredibly beautiful and gorgeous.

No one sings Pham Duy’s music better than Thai Thanh. Because of Pham Duy’s music, Thai Thanh was dubbed the “First Famous Singer” by the press and experts at that time. For those who are Buddhists, the collection of 10 articles is certainly no stranger Dao Ca Pham Duy popularized the poem Pham Thien Thu through Thai Thanh singing. For those who love love music, they will never forget it Thousands of miles apart, Return my love, Leaves fall on the afternoon road… Those who love epic stories of Vietnamese history and their homeland will be immersed in it Love Songs, Memories, epic The main road, epic Mother Vietnam… The most famous works of the great Pham Duy shine brightly through her voice.

In addition, she also successfully sang the works of many famous musicians of that time such as Van Cao, Cung Tien, Pham Dinh Chuong, Pham Trong Cau…

For audiences who want to learn Thai Thanh singing for the first time, the writer would like to introduce to you the music tape To Vang 4: Thai Thanh – Timeless singing. This is a classic music tape, the easiest to listen to and has a lot of artistic value when it comes to Thai Thanh singing.

Please close this article with a song by musician Pham Duy in the work Love Song: “I have loved the language of my country since I was born…”. Through Thai Thanh singing, my country’s language becomes even more extraordinarily beautiful. A luxurious, elegant voice that is still rich in love for the homeland.

We would like to express our gratitude to Thai Thanh’s once-in-a-lifetime singing voice, which soared for more than half a century and followed the wind and clouds to the high heavens. Thai Thanh’s singing will echo for a long time, as long as Vietnamese people still listen to Pham Duy’s music.
