Stripe and Advent are in talks over a $53 billion acquisition of PayPal

Stripe and private investment firm Advent are in talks to acquire PayPal in a deal that could value the digital payments company at about $53 billion, after PayPal rejected a $60.50-a-share offer in July.

Negotiations are still ongoing and a deal could be reached within the next few weeks as PayPal CEO Enrique Lores, who joined the company in March 2026 after many years at HP, works to turn the company around.

In April, he restructured PayPal into three business units, including consumer financial services, including Venmo.

The reported valuation is still well below PayPal’s peak during the pandemic.

PayPal’s stock price peaked at $310 in 2021 before falling about 80%.

Stripe’s latest acquisition offer values the company at $159 billion and says Stripe is profitable.

Any deal could face antitrust and data scrutiny .

Additionally, PayPal is considering cost-cutting measures that could reduce the company’s workforce by 20% within two to three years.
