Explaining The Tale of Kieu in ballet language

Ho Chi Minh City Ballet and Symphony Theater organized a ballet introduction Kieu comes in Last afternoon of June 10. This is a collaborative project between the Theater and the Vietnam Dance Artists Association. Ballet Kieu Directed by artist Tuyet Minh and adapted by author.

nArtist Tuyet Minh has prepared a strong crew, quietly rehearsing to debut at the Ho Chi Minh City Theater on June 20 and Hanoi in August. She shared many interesting things about this ballet.

n The project to create the ballet “Kieu” was implemented many times but in the end had to be shelved, in which the financial factor used to cause headaches for previous generations. What kind of opportunity and pressure did you have when you became the person responsible for staging the ballet “Kieu”?n

Actually, me and choreographers Phuc Hung, Phuc Hai, musicians Viet Anh, Chinh Ba and the crew performed the play Kieu with more joy than pressure. Kieu is a great work that has been translated into many languages, has entered the soul of the Vietnamese people, and has been honored by heads of state and leaders around the world in speeches and presentations when visiting and working in Vietnam… For me, Kieu by the great poet Nguyen Du is both close, simple and monumental with human values that I need to share with everyone in the language I am best at, which is ballet.

Ballet Kieu It will be a big challenge if we cannot gather many solo actors to take on positive and negative roles. Even the storytelling characters are also message carriers, so it requires artists who are both highly professional and have good performance.

In staging the ballet “Kieu” this time, what advantages and difficulties did you encounter?

Luckily for me at this time, the dance troupe of the Ho Chi Minh City Opera and Symphony Theater is gathering a strong cast of young actors in terms of both quantity and quality of techniques and effects.

Another challenge for me is funding. If we re-stage world classical ballets in a version suitable for Vietnam, it will be less expensive than a completely new production in every stage. But we must understand the conditions we live in to be creative in both art and in organizing, promoting and performing…

With a large-scale play like “Kieu”, when were you ready? How was the preparation time for the ballet “Kieu”?

In 2014 after the contemporary dance play Rotator My work is highly appreciated by experts, I have approached Buddhist thought and changed my outlook on life and art. From then on, I determined to explain The Tale of Kieu in ballet language.

In 2017, I completed the script, in 2018 received a composition order from the Vietnam Dance Artists Association, in 2019 we quietly gathered a crew to prepare for the birth of ballet. Kieu in 2020.

Previously, “The Tale of Kieu” was also adapted but in the form of contemporary dance art. The previous ballet project “Kieu” was also shared in part. However, the audience still cannot imagine what Kieu is like on the ballet stage?

The Tale of Kieu is a great masterpiece and has been exploited in many diverse art forms. With dance there was a play Kieu Set in the contemporary dance genre by a Korean female choreographer and is solid Kieu In the eyes of foreigners with a different culture, there will be a different way of posing problems, thinking and solving problems that convey a different message.

10 years ago there was also a ballet staging project Kieu but it has not come true due to many difficulties from internal forces. The audience can only imagine ballet Kieu 2020 for me and my crew when coming to the stage of Ho Chi Minh City Opera House and Hanoi. Because performing arts must be felt directly, must come to the stage and be immersed and experienced in the stage space.

If I were to tell it here, it wouldn’t be possible to say it all, because the language of dance is only most beautiful when conveyed through the body, soul, and performance of the actor. If not, you can buy it The Tale of Kieu by Nguyen Du is better to read…

Thank you for the conversation!

Tickets are sold, but there are no invitations

The play is associated with Thuy Kieu’s 4 playings of the pianon Ballet Kieu wants to express the value of “human morality” that the great poet Nguyen Du conveyed, so it will not describe Kieu’s 15 years of wandering. The play is divided into 3 acts, 15 scenes. The implications from the 3,254 verses will be stylized through the 3 times Kieu meets Dam Tien’s ghost, and the progression of the entire play is estimated to revolve around 4 times Kieu plays the piano.

n As shared by the director, the sound of the guitar cannot be a deceitful language of mood: Sometimes whispering, gentle, soft, earnest; sometimes sobbing, excited, passionate; There are scenes where she screams and mourns, then melts and endures… All are the intense sentimentality of Kieu’s heart yearning to find happiness and also the voice of Nguyen Du in the face of the blackness and injustice of contemporary society.
