Intel aims to design a hybrid power source to compete with TSMC

Intel is considering a hybrid power supply design for its 14A2 chip manufacturing process, allowing electricity to be conducted from both the front and back of the chip.

This change will make 14A2 the successor technology to Intel’s 14A process, which is expected to begin pilot production in 2028 and mass production in 2029.

A hybrid approach is being considered because shrinking the size of the connections increases the risk of resistance and voltage drop. A network with only a back structure may also have difficulty providing sufficient current.

This design can maintain power margin, but will also increase routing and manufacturing complexity, which can make maintaining productivity more difficult.

This move does not necessarily put Intel ahead of TSMC on time, as the A16 is expected to enter mass production in 2027.

Intel also said it has two potential customers for the 14A chip, but no outside customers have committed to buying this chip.
