“American Gothic” portrays the spirit of resilience and traditional values of the United States

Grant Wood (1891–1942) is one of the outstanding faces of the American Regionalism movement. Along with Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry, Wood defined a realistic painting style that achieved critical acclaim during the Great Depression (1929–1939). Going through the dark years of the economic crisis, artists of this school actively rejected modernism and abstract art. Instead, they focus on meticulous realistic drawing, favoring rural themes and everyday life to tell a vivid story, clearly portraying the lifestyle of people in the American Midwest.

The house inspires

Everything starts with a house. Wood himself was born and raised in rural Iowa, and he happened upon this house in August 1930 while visiting the town of Eldon. Immediately, he sketched it because he was fascinated by the appearance of Gothic-style windows on such a small house. The building is built in style Carpenter Gothic (Gothic mộc) vốn rất phổ biến tại Mỹ trong thập niên 1880.

Models in the painting

As for the real-life figures who modeled for the painting, Wood convinced his sister Nan to portray the woman, and the family dentist, Byron McKeeby, to portray the man. They did completely separate modeling sessions, and the artist put together the entire work right in his studio.

The couple in the painting wear outfits reminiscent of American rural life in the early 20th century, denim overalls for work and classic colonial-patterned aprons. An interesting detail is that Grant Wood asked his sister to sew this apron herself, and she used jagged ribbons from their mother’s old dress. Both the costumes and standing positions of the characters prove that Wood has no intention of portraying modern American life but is looking nostalgically at the past.

The relationship between man and woman is still a mystery. Many people believe that the painting is depicting a married couple. The artist himself is also quite ambiguous on this point, and it is that ambiguity that further fuels the curiosity and pervasiveness of the work. However, according to Nan Wood Graham’s account, the couple are pictured as a father and daughter. This was also confirmed in a handwritten letter from Wood himself.

Public opinion and heated debates

The work was submitted to the annual exhibition of American painting at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1930. The painting excellently won a bronze medal, a cash reward and was acquired to be included in the museum’s permanent collection, directly making Wood’s name shine.

After this resounding success, there were heated debates from the public. On the one hand, critics believe that the picture offers a satirical look at the life of small towns in America. On the other hand, many Iowans were offended by Wood’s portrayal of them through prejudicial stereotypes. The large age gap between the two characters – who were mistaken for husband and wife – is also part of the focus of criticism.

Grant Wood has flatly denied those allegations. For him, this work is not a caricature, but an appreciation and tribute to the American rural community. The Great Depression was a period when society craved works of art that could revive and celebrate the American spirit. American Gothic was born to represent the hardworking and resilient people of the Midwest.

Until this day, American Gothic is constantly borrowed and parodied in countless popular culture products. This proves that this masterpiece is still fertile ground for social commentary perspectives on any American value, and that the debate about America’s core values that it sparked in 1930 is still intact in the contemporary context.
