BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid vehicle manufacturer, said on July 10 that its total output of new energy vehicles has surpassed 17 million units.
The company said global sales in the first half of 2026 reached 1,808,511 vehicles. Overseas sales of passenger cars and pickup trucks totaled 789,367 units, up 68% over the same period last year.
Previous industry comparisons show that BYD has sold more than 15 million electric vehicles and accounts for about 20% of total global electric vehicle sales. That helps BYD surpass the total number of battery electric vehicles delivered by Tesla.
BYD continues to expand its operations abroad in Southeast Asia and Europe.
In Thailand, BYD accounts for 38.5% of new electric vehicle registrations in 2024, while Chinese brands reach 10% of European car sales by December 2025.
In Europe, BYD is subject to a 17.4% European Union tariff on battery electric vehicles made in China. The company is also building factories in Hungary and Türkiye to expand domestic production.
