Google says the number of active users of its Gemini app in Southeast Asia has more than doubled in the past year, based on reports from Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
The company says nearly 70% of support requests in the region are sent in local languages, while nearly three-quarters of requests come from mobile devices.
The announcement also said that Singapore has the highest Gemini adoption rate per capita globally and the highest daily engagement in Southeast Asia.
During the workweek, nearly four in 10 phone uses in Singapore are for tasks such as explaining or debugging code.
Google also cites AI Singapore’s SEA-HELM (Southeast Asia Holistic Evaluation of Language Models) benchmark, which evaluates large-scale language models based on five core pillars in Southeast Asian languages.
The company says the results of this comparison support its assertion that Gemini is the overall highest performing model for those languages.
Google did not disclose in the documents it reviewed how it defined “active users.”
The company also said Gemini Spark is currently available in English for Google AI Ultra subscribers and will begin rolling out in local languages in Southeast Asia this week, although the public Spark documentation we reviewed did not list those languages at launch.
