Land Rover Defender: 635 horsepower machine honors the Dakar Rally champion

Land Rover has just launched the all-new Defender Dakar – a version honoring the off-road racing car that conquered the Dakar Rally, now legal for street use and even more powerful than the prototype.

Defender Dakar has a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, producing 635 horsepower. The car is equipped with 35-inch tires mounted on 20-inch wheels, ready to conquer all sand dunes, especially when activating Dunes driving mode. There’s also a Gravel mode that adjusts dynamics to optimize performance on a variety of terrain types. Most special is the third mode called Flight – in this mode, the Defender Dakar’s suspension system will “predict” when the vehicle will land while flying in the air, helping to reduce vibrations and ensure maximum stability. This is an extremely useful feature for those who are passionate about racing on sand dunes, and is also an impressive “trick” to show off.

In addition, the car is also equipped with a series of details imbued with the spirit of racing such as: reinforced underbody armor, carbon fiber air intakes and hood, fixed roof with integrated lights, exposed rivet details and special fenders. Defender Dakar will have many color options, notably Dakar Sand yellow combined with Yanbu Turquoise roof, exactly like the color tone of the original D7X-R.

“We first developed the Defender OCTA into the D7X-R, and then asked ourselves: could we make the Dakar Rally champion D7X-R a street-legal vehicle?” – Mr. Mark Cameron, CEO of Defender brand, shared. “This vehicle not only embodies the spirit of the Defender Rally team, but also exemplifies our long legacy of off-road innovation.”

Defender Dakar was introduced at The Quail – A Motorsports Gathering event. Like all other automakers, Defender and JLR are having to manage in a market where trends seem to constantly change, sometimes leaning towards fully electric vehicles, sometimes hybrid cars, sometimes back to internal combustion engines, depending on the month, even day by day. JLR has responded by developing models that can support all three types of powertrains. However, with Defender specifically, this problem is somewhat more complicated because off-road enthusiasts are still quite cautious about electric vehicles.

Defender affirms that one thing will never change: the core identity of the brand, which has built a lasting reputation over decades thanks to its strength and durability off-road.

“We cannot lose Defender’s inherent DNA,” shared Mr. Mark Cameron. “It’s true that we will have to switch to electric vehicles in some markets, but we cannot give up the values that make a true Defender such as the vehicle’s performance and structure. Otherwise, we will just become a normal SUV brand like many other names.”

Land Rover said it has begun accepting registrations of interest for the Defender Dakar, official bookings will take place in early 2027, and the first cars are expected to be delivered to customers later that year.
