Historical Background
Peder Severin Krøyer possesses an outstanding painting talent who quickly conquered the Danish art world. At the age of 14, he was accepted into the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and soon became a successful portrait painter with a series of orders from the nobility.

By 1882, he was attracted to Skagen – a peaceful coastal fishing village on the Kattegat Strait – where he aspired to establish a community of artists. Therefore, in 1891, Krøyer and his wife, Marie, decided to move here to settle permanently.
It was in this brilliant and liberal coastal atmosphere that Peder Severin Krøyer created the most iconic painting of his career: "Summer Evening on Skagen Sønderstrand". Worthy of being a masterpiece of Danish Impressionism.
Overall Layout
"Summer Evening on Skagen Sønderstrand" is an oil painting on canvas measuring 150 cm wide and 100 cm high (59 in x 39 in). The painting depicts the image of two women striding along the coastline of a deserted beach.
The sun is setting to the back right of the two women, illuminating their dresses and casting shadows to their front left. However, the entire composition is still dominated by shades of blue and white.
Furthermore, the cream cotton dress blends seamlessly with the pale sand of the beach, while the shimmering blue sea water is in perfect harmony with the cloudy dark afternoon sky.
Arrangement According to Mathematical Proportions

The overall composition of the painting gives a quite relaxing and natural feeling. However, no detail is random. The three main elements of the work (the two women, the coastline and the horizon) are all strategically placed according to mathematical calculations.
If the painting is divided at a scale of one-third (red boundary line), the two women are placed one-third from the left edge of the canvas horizontally; Therefore, their head – the visual highlight located one-third from the top edge vertically. Their bodies thus fit at the one-third by one-third intersection of the frame, creating a vivid off-center point of view.
The horizon line (yellow) is located one-quarter from the top edge of the picture. It starts with a strip of green hills on the right, runs along the pale sand and then fades where the sea and sky meet. This high placement further enhances the work’s off-center composition. It creates an imbalance but at the same time allows the vast expanse of the sandbank to completely dominate both the foreground and mid-ground areas.
Two Women

Who are the two women striding across the foreground? That is the artist’s wife – Ms. Marie Krøyer, and her close friend – the famous artist Anna Ancher.
According to Peder Severin Krøyer, the dinner party had just ended when the two friends decided to walk together in the late afternoon along the beach. What are they whispering about? Perhaps Mrs. Krøyer was confiding about her husband’s recent erratic behavior. As early as 1893, he began to have strange psychological manifestations.
At that time, neither the woman nor Peder Krøyer could have foreseen that his illness would become more and more serious, and eventually he would have to be admitted to a mental hospital in 1900. Are we witnessing a delicate dialogue in a gentle, shy natural setting?

Contemporary Rediscovery
"Summer Evening on Skagen Sønderstrand" was first exhibited in 1895 and was immediately hailed as a supreme masterpiece. The painting was quickly acquired and kept in various private collections until 1985, when the final owner donated it to the Skagens Museum in Skagen, Denmark.
What would Peder Severin Krøyer think about the painting’s brilliant return after a century of its creation? Will you find it interesting or annoying? Regardless of his feelings, the modern world still appreciates the delicate colors, strong lines and harmonious atmosphere of his works.
It is a quiet harmony between blue and white. That is the essence of Danish Impressionism. A truly pure and magical beauty.
