If you are in Venice on Epiphany (Epiphany – January 6), Festa Della Sensa in early May or during important events in Venice or Italy, you cannot miss the unprecedented performance taking place on San Marco square. From midday you can admire the Three Wise Men, the Wizard King appearing on the clock tableau of the procession of the Virgin Mary and the Child Jesus. At every hour, from the balcony window above the clock emerges this wooden procession, representing the Nativity of Christ to the ringing sound of the Carillon. The procession exits from a door next to an Angel playing heavenly music, bowing to Jesus and Mary and entering the Old Tower.
Along with that scene, at the Bell Tower on the Square, two giant bronze bell tower de-Jacquemart statues (also known as Moors) will alternately hammer the bells at the beginning of each hour on the rooftop.

nThe square originated from an empty area in front of the still humble St. Mark’s Church in the 9th century. This is where the announcement and ceremony of the city council is held, and is also where the festival is held, famous for its Carnival masquerade from the aristocracy.
nToday, St. Mark’s Square is the result of many tectonic construction phases separated in time, mainly between 1200 – 1600.n
The first building was the church for the Holy Bone of Saint Mark in 829, under the 11th and 12th Doge. According to legend, the saint’s remains were stolen from the city of Alexandria (Egypt) to Venice. The church was built next to Doge’s Palace (City Governor’s Palace).
nDuring the incident in 976, the church and 300 houses caught fire and were completely burned down. On that occasion, the governor Pietro I Orseolo (928 – 987) recreated this land.
nSt. Mark’s Square had its present size when the Rio Batario’s branch and the harbor between the square and the Doge’s Palace were filled with soil. Between 1172 and 1178, Doge Sebastiano Ziani expanded the square, and by 1177, when the Holy Roman Emperor Friedrich I visited, it was the representative center of the republican city of Venice. Since 1723, the square has been paved with trachyte stone, with a light-colored geometric pattern on a darker background, giving the impression that the long square is deeper.
nPorta della Carta is the gate to the Doge’s Palace*, also known as the Golden Gate (Porta Aurea) because it is plated with a lot of gold, built between 1438 and 1442 under the leadership of Giovanni and Bartolomeo. The statue built by Francesco Foscari was placed next to the gate, depicting the doge kneeling before the winged lion – the symbol of Saint Mark as well as the city of Venice.

In the middle of the Doge’s Palace is the Biblioteca Marciana (St. Mark’s Library) and the Piazzetta die Leoncini, with two tall columns bearing the images of St. Mark and St. Torado. Biblioteca Marciana connects Piazzetta with Saint Mark’s Square.n
Hidden behind the wonderful and overwhelming ancient beauty of Venice are the sacrifices of so many artists and the silent contributions to those quintessence.n
Xin được chia sẻ những câu chuyện bên lề do chính người viết có dịp trò chuyện cùng anh Federico Esposti, một vị chủ đại lý đồng hồ bên cạnh hành lang chân tháp Toore dell'Orologio.
n– According to some historical researchers, there is an anecdote that the medieval government wanted to hide a terrible truth: when the watchmaker completed his own masterpiece, a secret State organization committed a crime that left the young man blind forever, so that he could never make a similar replica, it had to be unique, a symbol of Venice. That tragic story was not allowed to be spread, going against the traditions of medieval Venice – a paradise of erudition that promoted knowledge, enlightenment and relative liberalism.
