The 4.5 liter bottle of premium red wine that wine connoisseurs have always dreamed of caused a stir at the auction at Christie’s.
Domaine de la Romanée-Conti (DRC) is known as the “big man” of the Burgundy region of France, which is known as the “wine cathedral”. Owning a long-standing bottle of DRC red wine is extremely difficult, but recently a bottle of the rarest level suddenly appeared in an auction – a 4.5 liter bottle of DRC jeroboam from 1970.
At Christie’s latest online wine auction taking place from now until July 31, this masterpiece is the focus of attention with an expected starting price of 60,000 USD. Possessing a list of about 626 bottles of wine, the auction displays precious and soulful wines from the wine cellar of famous expert Benjamin Ichinose – a person knowledgeable about wine with a huge wine fortune.
Michael Broadbent, the late British wine critic, once shared: “When I saw Ben Ichinose’s wine cellar, I immediately realized it was one of the greatest wine cellars in the world, absolutely perfect in every way.”

Take a quick look at Benjamin Ichinose’s excellent wine cellar
Ichinose built his wine cellar in the 60s and 70s, and this place gives us an overview of the golden age of wine collecting in the world. It includes everything from the best wines ever produced in Bordeaux and Burgundy to the finest California wines ever to appear at auction. Since collectors connect with many wine producers, the origin of each bottle of wine is of more concern and many bottles are genuine gifts from wine brands. For example, Lady Bollinger – owner of the famous Bollinger wine company – gave Ichinose a bottle of Bollinger in 1961 and 1964.
So, besides the legendary bottle of DRC 1970 red wine above, what other “treasures” will be auctioned in this round?

Petrus 1961
That includes a rare 6-liter bottle of 1961 Château Lafite-Rothschild Imperial, expected to sell for between 6,000 and 10,000 USD, and a bottle of 1961 Petrus, pegged at between 5,500 and 8,000 USD. You’ll also find premium bottles from 1929 – the birth year of Ichinose and his wife, as well as bottles from 1961, 1964 and 1965, the birth years of his children.
As you would expect from a serious collector, Ichinose is extremely meticulous and attentive to his beloved wine cellar. Red wine is kept at 11 degrees Celsius, while white wine is kept stable at 9 degrees Celsius. Therefore, the wine when auctioned will always be in an ideal state with excellent transparency and color.
